The Olivia Gude & Walker reading
for 8/27 where exceptionally easy reads. At first glance (yes I know never
judge the book by its cover) appeared as if they were going to be a dry and
mind-numbing read. However they were completely opposite!
The Olivia Gude articles hammered in
on topics and question that had been going through my mind, such how do I truly
engage my students in meaningful art process?, and the dreadful question of
what pursuit should we go on that would have my students wanting to keep their
finish pieces of works on display forever and not just shove the pursuit into a
closet or the attic!
The Walker text also pointed out “BIG”
ideas that I am starting to see evident in my own work. Yet the Walker text
help me further understand the context, theme, subject, and material/process
union earlier.
These two reading are equipping us
with forward thinking for art education for the 21st century. They divulge into areas that tend to be
unspoken about, when I came across Olivia Gude text “today’s students,
over-constricted by educations system that often focuses on knowing the right
answer, need guidance in reclaiming their capacities for conceptual,
imaginative play” I had to hold by my leaping and shouting for joy of someone
else feeling the same was as I! I feel that our generation of artist teachers
feel exactly were Walker and Gude are going with needing to teach meaning in
art making, however we come from the period of needing the right answer, but we
want to break that cycle! Yet we need to figure out how do we achieve this
goal!
With this said the amazing points and
recommendation that were in these reading further gave me more insight on were
I want my philosophy to address.
You need to load an image of your journey piece and an artist statement that describes the meaning of your work. You also need to post photos of your Big Idea book and pages one and two.
